State Fair Announces 2007 California Fine Art Award Winners

Award-winning artworks to be exhibited at the State Fair

SACRAMENTO, CA (August 7, 2007) - The California State Fair announced today the award winning artworks for 2007 California Fine Art Competition. Open to California artists aged 18 and over, the 2007 competition received 1,833 entries. The jury selected 188 artworks from this field to be exhibited and eligible for awards. All award-winning artworks will be exhibited at the California State Fair August 17th through September 3rd 2007 in Building 7, Expo Center. Awards will be presented to the artists at an Awards Ceremony held Thursday, August 16, 2007.

A Juror’s Award and Best of Show went to sculpture “Grandma Planet” by Sacramento artist Dave Lane. The Juror’s Awards for 2-Dimensional Artworks went to “The Church of Private Enterprise” by artist Zachary Williams of Sacramento and “Autumn Oak” a drawing by Kay Harden of Fortuna. The Juror’s Award for Western and Equine Art went to “Hydra” a work in watercolor by Chris Rankin of Folsom. The Juror’s Award for Photography was awarded to “American River Blues” by Christopher Spurrell of Auburn. “The Beginnings of Clarity” a work in mixed media by Crystal Weber of Sacramento won the Juror’s Award for Artworks made from Recycled material.

Jurors also selected 30 artworks to receive Awards of Excellence and 152 artworks to receive Awards of Merit. In addition, the following special awards were also given:

  • The California State Fair Innovation Award – “Damming Chaos” a collaborative triptych by Sacramento artists Joy Bertinuson, Carrie Markel and Julia Stagg.
  • The Kay Boron Memorial Award for watercolor – “Tempus Fugit” by Kara Castro of Auburn.
  • The Northern California Arts Award – “Comfortably White Chair” by Aaron Brown of Sacramento.
  • The California Institute of Jewelry Training Award for Jewelry – “Deco Box #2” by Lorrene Baum-Davis of Placerville.
  • The Association of Clay & Glass Artists Award for Ceramics – “Four Brothers” by Christie Beniston of Solano Beach.
  • The Association of Clay & Glass Artists Award for Glass – “Trophy” by David Hopman of Sutter Creek.
  • The Sacramento Fine Arts Center Award – “Portrait of Frankie in a Big Chair” an acrylic painting by artist Roma Devanbu of Davis.
  • The Valley Sculpture Artists Award for a sculptural Work – “Male Bust” by Tom Arbour of Placentia.
  • The Inside Publications Award – “Sacramento River” by Lana Carter of Vallejo.
  • The California State Fair Wine Award for an outstanding work in the theme Division, Vino!
  • The “Art of Wine” – “Sanitary Sewer” by Kevin Flory of Sacramento.
